
Scope
Irrespective of what is stated below, the Lifting Supervisor is not exempt from any of the duties or restricted in any of the rights as described under the “Merchant Shipping Act” and the “Seaman’s Act” according to Flag State.
The Lifting Supervisor is responsible for executing the lifting operations in a safe manner and in accordance with the instructions given in the Lift Plan.
Nearest Supervisor
On board the Lifting Supervisor’s (LS) nearest superior is the Deck Officer On Watch (OOW). The Lifting Supervisor reports to the OOW in regards of operational matters.
The Lifting Supervisor further reports to the Appointed Person (AP) regarding the execution of the Lift Plan, including communicating any required/requested Lift Plan amendments.
It should be noted that the LS has two reporting lines, and it is important that the LS, AP and OOW communicate in an open and efficient way in order to ensure that lifting operations are carried out safely.
Responsibilities
- Never commence any lifting operations before approval from the OOW.
- Ensure all communications are minimised to essential only during lifting operations.
- Review and comment on the Lift Plan and liaise with the Appointed Person in this regard.
- Ensure all planned lifting operations are briefed in Tool Box talk
- Instruct, direct and supervise the lifting team in the safe execution of the Lift Plan.
- Ensure that all safety precautions for accident prevention are taken and observed.
- Ensure minimum communications over the radio during lifting operations.
- Restrict deck access to authorised personnel only during lifting operations.
- In general, carry out all duties relevant to the rank as required by the law, the Common practise and good seamanship and in accordance with the instructions of superiors.
- Report any accident, hazardous occurrence (near-miss) and non-conformance.
- When handing over the lifting supervisor role, complete a written handover.
