A quick safety video to watch over a coffee that may save a life. A common misconception regularly found when inspecting a vessels mooring station is that standing outside of snap back zone is safe. It is not, as most seafarers already know……

Chapter 26.3.2 of the United Kingdom Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers, now provides advice on Snap Back Zones follows: Owing to the design of mooring decks, the entire area should be considered a potential snap-back zone. All crew working on a mooring deck should be made aware of this with clear visible signage. Chapter 26.3.3 The painting of snap-back zones on mooring decks should be avoided because they may give a false sense of security.
Additional information may also be sought in the IMO guidelines “MSC.1-Circ.1619 – The design of mooring arrangements and the selection of appropriate mooring equipment and fittings”
The following video provided by Holmes Solutions is the best example of the potential ramifications I have seen to highlight this common misconception.
